The focus throughout my degree work has been to interpret text into image. For my major project I have created an illustrated book inspired by the thoughts and menus of Vincent M. Holt. ‘Why Not Eat Insects?’ is a Victorian text, which encouraged people to incorporate insects into their everyday diet, and suggested dishes such as ‘Stag Beetle Larvae on Toast’ and ‘Sole with Woodlouse Sauce’.
Through combining fine line pen illustrations with photography, I have reinterpreted these concepts into imaginative, highly textured images, which capture the luminosity of the insects themselves. Alongside my illustrated book, I have created a set of recipe cards, containing real recipes for you to try at home, if you dare!
My reimagined ‘Why Not Eat Insects?’ is a playful, slightly disturbing look at how we perceive and eat food, and challenges the viewer to rethink how they see and feel about insects.
