Rosemary Knowles

I love to create extremely large and extremely small, decorative and surreal, feminine and sometimes sculptural, wordless narratives. My work explores the power of nature and layers of inter-connectivity; anatomy and mortality; and the fragility of life. Most of my time is spent with a pen in one hand and a cup of tea in the other!

In March 2009 I was selected to create an installation and animated short as a part of Flatpack Festival's Installation Trail. With the help of animator Alec Chalmers, I filled a shop window with a romantic graveyard setting, and brought to life our tale about the oldest couple in Birmingham, who awaken from the big sleep to reminisce their relationship through dance.

For my last university project I have amalgamated my interest in the macabre and romance, and further developed my sinuous line-work and hybrid creatures, influenced by the likes of James Jean and H.R.Giger. Inspired by the 17th century Vanitas paintings, Fragile Worlds is a series of fashion items that adorn the wearer with a visual reminder of our mortality and the fragility of life.
